Long before Hauge Lutheran Church was built here on the banks of Canoe Creek, near to the spot from which its limestone was quarried, Pastor Elling Eielsen, the first Norwegian ordained in America, was conducting home meetings, baptisms and burials here in Canoe Valley. From the people who had been worshipping in homes and log schools, he organized Hauge Lutheran in 1872, and helped to plan construction of the church building which began in 1874. People have continued to be baptized here ever since.
